It’s not really accurate to say that "the left" has taken control of the broadcast mechanisms. Liberals have taken control of the broadcast mechanisms, and the left proper has been shut out.

As Fred Turner makes clear in From Counterculture To Cyberculture, the alliance between actual leftists and a particular branch of libertarianism- for-me-but-not-for-thee liberals he calls "the new communalists" was a marriage of convenience, dissolved when the material conditions of the latter changed.

The left proper is still the domain of pranksterism. Unfortunately, leftism is so far outside the overton window that most people, even after encountering leftists and leftist ideas, cannot imagine them! So, the spotlight is on the elements of the right who crib from the leftist playbook.
